Abstract: The risks associated with drinking alcohol during pregnancy are presented in an easy-to-understand question and answer format. Alcohol is one of the number of drugs that may harm the developing fetus and should be used very cutiously, if at all, during pregnancy. Birth defects that may result from heavy drinking including physical deformities and retarded growth and mental development. Simple illustrations show how alcohol affects fetal development and how risk increases with increased alcohol intake. The safest recommendation for pregnant women is to avoid use of alcohol and other drugs. Women who suspect they have alcohol-related problems can contact outside services for help. Additional practices that increases the chance of a having healthy baby include 1) eating nutritious and well-balanced meals, 2) refraining from cigarette smoking, and 3) following a doctor's orders.
