Abstract: Nutritionally complete liquid diets have become a very important part of clinical treatment. "Chemically defined" or "elemental" diets based on synthetic preparations or purified natural foods can be administered orally or by tube. The characteristics, composition, and specific applications of most commercially available preparations are identified in table form by completeness of nutritional content, presence of residue, lactose content, amino acid sources, or other nutrients. Indications for use and limitations are discussed, as are procedures for tube feeding.
