Abstract: Nutritional requirements of and feeding guidelines for infants and children are discussed in this nutrition handbook from Boston Children's Hospital. Growth standards and nutrition assessment components (anthropometrics, bone age, nutritent intake, past medical history, labortory evaluation) are explained. Methods of estimating requirements for energy and several nutrients are presented. The nutrient composition and caloric density of breast milk and variety of commercial infant formulas are compared; recommendations concerning osmolality, renal solute load, oral rehydration, and vitamin/mineral supplements are provided. Descriptions are included of standard and modified diet orders used at the hospital. Guidelines for initiating and monitoring enteral and total parenteral feeding programs are presented. Numerous appendices examine infant feeding guidelines, the introduction of solid foods, nutrient content of baby foods food and medication interactions, GI tests, stool characteristics and infant birth weight categories.
