The author provides a brief historical and systetmatic overview of the Oligochaeta, and a review of the major workers in the field for the benefit of non-specialist readers; and outline the development of this book, and conclude by explaining how to use the index with some specific examples. Because the oligochaetes, and the taxonomists who have tried to force order upon them, are not confined to one linguistic area, the authors present introductory comments in six languages.
