Although many people attend conferences, few people have written about their research experiences. In this case study, Rebecca Dimond describes the scientific and support group conferences she attended as part of an ethnographic PhD project. The practical decisions made are discussed, and the encountered problems, such as how to gain consent and from whom, how to get involved in the event and how to record data.
