Abstract: Very little information is available in the literature about permanently thin individuals who were once fat. The authors studied individuals who lost 20% or more body weight and kept the weight off for at least 2 years with no more than a 5 pound gain from the lowest weight reached. They attempted to identify the explanation for permanent weight loss. Major facts discovered are that weight loss is a highly individualized process and successful programs are almost always custom-made. Also those suc cessful people were not always able to identify what made their weight loss so successful. The "winners" had three things in common: they were not super human regarding will-power; they all followed distinct predicatable patterns to lose weight; and positive and powerful change occured in all their lives.
