Abstract: Physical effects of caffeine on the body and the caffeine content of some common beverages and medications are presented in this factsheet from the Nutrition and Dietetics Training Program of the Indian Health Service. Physical effects of caffeine include stimulation of the central nervous system, increased secretion of stomach acid, and increased blood glucos levels. Caffeine data is provided for various types of coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate, and non-prescription medications (weight control aids, alertness tablets, analgesics, cold/allergy pills). Reduced-caffeine and caffeine-free beverage alternatives are suggested.
