Abstract: Recommendations for daily intakes of selected nutrients are presented in this technical report prepared by the Nutrition Advisory Committee to the Minister of Health of New Zealand as a further step toward the development of a national nutrition policy. Background information is provided on important considerations in establishing recommendations, rationale for the two-tier system of recommendations, method of presentation, and the need for a review mechanism to modify recommendations as new evidence becomes available. The two-tier system of recommendations provides, for each nutrient, an estimated intake level below which there is some risk to health and an estimated daily adequate intake level. In addition to tables on the recommended intake of selected nutrients, tables also show 1) energy intake average for groups of healthy individuals at normal activity levels, 2) typical exercise expenditure for various activities, 3) satisfactory weight ranges for adults 20-60 years, 4) potentially toxic nutrient intake levels for adults, and 5) other nutrients currently considered essential. Brief notes identify and explain relevant research results that influenced recommendations made for protein, energy, sources of energy (carbohydrate, neutral fat, essential fatty acids, protein, alcohol), fiber, vitamins (A, D, E, B6, B12, C, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folic acid, and minerals (iron, calcium, magnesium, copper, zinc, iodiele, fluoride, selenuim, chromium). A bibliography is included; members of the Nutrition Advisory Committee are introduced.
