A study has been conducted to establish the bending properties of full-size hem-fir (western hemlock and amabilis fir) timber used in Japanese post and beam building construction. Bending strength and modulus of elasticity test results on the 105-mm by 105-mm, 90-mm by 90-mm, 45-mm by 105-mm, 30-mm by 105-mm, and 45-mm by 90-mm specimens are presented in this paper. The in-grade test results indicate that the design values for hem-fir currently published in the Japanese Building Code seem to be conservative.
