Electrophoresis as a method for isolating active producer variants

Heterogeneous populations were separated electrophoretically on the basis of electrokinetic potential into fractions differing in target product biosynthesis activity. The following correlation was found to exist between electrokinetic potential and microorganism productivity: the lower the absolute value of the electrokinetic potential, the higher was antibiotic biosynthesis activity. Use of electrophoresis makes it possible to isolate active producer variants with less expenditure of labor and time than for traditional techniques.
