Effect of time on tissue deposition of selenium in sheep fed calcium selenite or sodium selenite

An experiment was conducted with 42 crossbred Rambouillet wether lambs to study the effect of time on tissue Se deposition from diets supplemented with Se as calcium selenite (CaSeO3) or sodium selenite (Na2SeO3). The basal corn-soybean meal-cottonseed hulls diet (.09 micrograms/grams Se DM basis by analysis) was supplemented with O or .3 micrograms/grams added Se from either source and fed for 40 or 80 days. Serum Se concentration was not affected (P>.10) by time or dietary treatment. Liver Se increased (P<.01) from an average of 1.57 micrograms/grams (DM basis) at 40 days to an average of 1.84 micrograms/grams at 80 days from all dietary treatments. Lambs fed the control diet had lower (P<.01) liver Se concentrations than thosesupplemented with Se but there was no difference between sources, which averaged 2.09 and 2.07 micrograms/grams for lambs fed CaSeO3 and Na2SeO3, respectively. Kidney Se concentration was not affected by Se source but increased (P</01) with time. Absorption and tissue deposition of Se from CaSeO3 was similar to that from Na2SeO3 when supplemented at .3 micrograms/grams to borderline Se-deficient diets containing natural feed ingredients.
