A preliminary study on the vegetative behaviour of the 'Forastero' peach cultivar grafted on different rootstocks

The purpose of the trial was to test the vegetative behaviour induced by several rootstocks when used for "Forastero" peach plants planted in a potentially productive area of Argentina. The orchard is situated in Chascomús (Buenos Aires province) with a satellite position 35º37’33.2’’ S; 57º59’35’’ W. Six rootstocks were compared. Two of them were GF 305 and Cuaresmillo, obtained from seeds. The latter is the most common local rootstock employed. The others were Ferdor-Julior, GF 655-2, Mr.S 2-5 and Brompton, obtained by micropropagation or by rooting of cuttings. Trees were planted at 5 x 3 m and trained to a Ypsilon (Y) system. Measurements of internode length, foliar area and chlorophyll contents were recorded in spring, summer and autumn during two consecutive years. Also, the weight of the wood pruned in winter and summer, and the maximum length of the two principal branches were registered. In addition, phenological observations of the vegetative bud-break and the autumn defoliation were recorded. Results obtained were significantly different between all the scion-rootstocks compared. In general, the rootstocks obtained from seeds showed remarkably vigorous scions. GF 655-2 induced a dwarf canopy effect like Brompton, whereas, Ferdor-Julior and Mr.S 2-5 promoted intermediate values.
