Supplemental treatments for increasing the mortality of insects during irradiation of grain

A literature review summarizes and discusses efforts that have been made to reduce radiation disinfestation costs for grain sterilization by adding a second treatment (thermal, chemical, or physical) that would predispose insects to increased damage when irradiated. The reported studies include: temperature variations before, during, or after irradiation; the use of infrared or microwave radiation to study stresses that might complement or potentiate the effectiveness of gamma radiation; variations of atmospheric pressure or oxygen depletion in attempts to produce hypoxia and decrease metabolic activity of food bacteria; the use of fumigants (methyl bromide; ozone) or pesticides (malathion; DDT) against insects; and the use of physical and mechanical controls to destroy grain insects by mechanical movement of grain from storage bin to storage bin and by using an airstream for moving the grain. The most satisfactory combination treatment presently involves moving the grain pneumatically and passing it through an expective aspirator and an ionizing irradiator.(wz)
