Double-blind randomised crossover trial of moderate sodium restriction in essential hypertension

Nineteen mild-moderate essential hypertensive patients (14 male, 5 female; mean age, 49), whose average supine blood pressure after 2 months of observation without treatment was 156/98, were advised to avoid both sodium-laden foods and adding salt to food. After 2 weeks of sodium restriction, the patients entered an 8-week double-blind randomized crossover study of "slow sodium" tablets (Ciba) vs. placebo. In the 4th week: mean supine blood pressure was 6.1% lower using the placebo than using slow sodium; urinary sodium excretion for slow sodium and placebo treatment was 162 and 86 mmol/24 hrs, respectively, with no difference in potassium excretion. The results suggest that moderate sodium dietary restriction achieved by the avoidance of sodium-laden foods and of adding salt to food should become part of essential hypertension management. (wz)
