Seven pyrrolizidine alkaloids were isolated from Echium pininana and their structures determined by spectroscopic methods. One of them is new and the name echiupinine is proposed for it. The corresponding echiupinine-N-oxide and the previously undescribed myoscorpine-N-oxide are also present in this plant species.
