Cyanidin-3-glucoside protects liver from oxidative damage through AMPK/Nrf2 mediated signaling pathway in vivo and in vitro

Cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) has been demonstrated to have hepatoprotective effect for oxidative stress-related liver damage due to its antioxidant activity. However, the antioxidant mechanisms of C3G are not fully understood. In this study, the hepatoprotective effect of C3G was evaluated and the underlying molecular mechanisms were investigated in vivo and in vitro. C3G attenuated H₂O₂ induced cell apoptosis through ROS scavenging and enhancing the antioxidant defence system in vitro. The AMPK/Nrf-2 signal pathway is involved in the mechanism of protective effect of C3G. In addition, the hepatoprotective effect of C3G has been demonstrated in vivo. C3G alleviated CCl₄-induced liver damage in mice through elevating antioxidant enzymes activities and upregulating Nrf2-antioxidant pathway. The findings suggest that C3G exhibits hepatoprotective effect. The results indicated that C3G exhibits hepatoprotective effect and could be used as a potential alternative for the liver against oxidative damage.
