Genotype x environment interaction and stability analysis in hybrid rice

One hundred twenty five rice hybrids alongwith their 28 parental lines and checks were evaluated over environments. The analysis of variance exhibited G x E interaction for all the traits except head rice recovery (%), 1000-grain weight (g), kernel length, kernel L:B ratio, protein content (%), amylose content (%). The G x E interaction (linear) component was significant for all the traits except 1000-grain weight (g), kernel length (mm), kernel L:B ratio, protein content (%), amylose content (%). Pooled deviation was significant for all the characters except kernel length (mm), kernel L: B ratio, 1000-grain weight (g), head rice recovery (%), amylose content (%), protein content (%) when tested against pooled error suggested importance of both linear and nonlinear components in building up total G x E interaction. Among 158 genotypes, two females, viz., KJTCMS-6B and RTN-3B, 6 males viz., BL-184AR, KJT-3-2-861-25-15-5, NVSR-20, PR-114, IR-22273 and Dandi along with 28 hybrids were found stable for grain yield plant⁻¹. The stability of genotypes revealed that none of the parents and hybrids proved to be ideal for better or poor environmental condition for all the characters. The best five stable hybrids viz., RTN-3A X BL-184AR, RTN-2A X NVSR-20, RTN-13A X GR-7, RTN-13A X IR-63879-195-195-2-2-3-2 and RTN-3A X GR-11 had high grain yield plant⁻¹ and had ideal stability for some other characters. Among 28, the most stable hybrids viz., RTN-3A X BL-184AR, RTN-2A X NVSR-20 and RTN-13A X GR-7 may be exploited for commercial cultivation in rice growing area of South Gujarat after extensive testing.
