A study evaluated the use and effectiveness of 2 human milk collection techniques (viz., hand expression and electrical pumping) by evaluating the volume and fat and energy contents of collected milk samples obtained from 10 middle-class, white mothers. Electrical pumping was found to produce milk of a higher, more uniform energy content than hand pumping. No significant differences were found in volume/day milk output and fat content between the 2 methods. The implications of these results for enhancing the quality control in cross-study comparisons (e.g., in examining milk from mothers of markedly different nutritional status) are discussed.(wz)
