Protein, amino acid, and caloric intakes of selected pregnant women

The relationship of toxemia of pregnancy to intakes of dietary protein, amino acids and total calories was investigated in 32 preeclamptic young women and 25 non-toxemic controls. Data were collected over a 3-year period by interviewers at a prenatal clinic and in the women's homes during the third trimester of pregnancy. Dietary recalls were translated into recipes for duplicating food items and preparation methods for nutrient analysis. It was found that the toxemic group tended to consume more protein than controls, particularly all the essential amino acids. Caloric intake was adequate. The relationships of protein consumption to toxemia and to glycosuria were similar and were opposite to that for anemia, implying a complex interrelationship of numerous factors.
