RESERVOIRS lined with unprotected flexible membrane and film are subject to damage during high winds. The magnitude and location of wind forces were determined over reservoir models in a wind tunnel. Reservoir geometric characteristics studied included leeward and approach slope, approach-slope height, and breadth-to-depth ratio. The negative pressure area in relationship to the entire reservoir was minimum when the approach and leeward slopes and breadth-to-depth ratio were at the minimums studied, 1:4, 1:4, and 5, respectively. Under these conditions, the adverse pressure area was confined to the leeward slope and a small area near the top edge of the downwind slope, and the entire reservoir bottom was under positive pressure. In contrast, when the slope was steeper, flow separation zones probably were more fully developed and covered larger parts of the reservoirs (entire reservoir when the breadth-to-depth ratio was 5), which resulted in nearly constant negative pressures over the interior surfaces of these systems.
