Ecophysiological response of tomato plants grown in a greenhouse with saline irrigation

The effect of two levels of irrigation water salinity (1.6 and 6,0 dS m-1) and two water regimes (100% of maximum evapotranspiration–ETM and 100% ETM + Lr – leaching requirements) on some physiological process of tomato plant cv. Marmande- Raf, grown in an unheated plastic greenhouse in Sicily (South – Italy), was studied. Transpiration rate, chlorophyll content and leaf area index increased, whereas stomatal resistance decreased with lower level of salinity and higher water supply. The addition of leaching requirement to 100% ETM significatively alleviated the negative impact of higher salinity level, proving useful for the regulation of plant water status and growth of tomato cultivated in salinity conditions.
