Bottle versus carton

Research studies compared glass milk bottles to milk cartons and plastic bottles. A West German study shows that the costs of raw materials are least expensive for glass bottles but manufacturing and labor costs add up to make glass cost more than the cartons and plastic bottles more than glass. No decisive differences in the energy consumption figures were found between milk cartons and milk bottles. Energy considerations included: number of times the bottle was used; energy to fill, transport and wash the bottle; energy recovered from burning waste cartons; and energy required to make the original product (glass, pulp, etc.). Significant changes were observed in milk stored in glass and exposed to light. Deterioration in taste occurred and riboflavin decreased. Cartons are the ideal container for milk sold in machines or supermarkets. (rkm)
