Extraction of Aluminum from Aluminum-Organic Matter Complexes

The objective of this study was to compare extractabilities of Al from Al-treated peats using KCl, CuCl₂, and HCl to the total Al content determined after dry ashing. Results showed that Al extracted by CuCl₂ or HCl correlated well with the total amount of Al present in the system. On the other hand, 1N KCl extracted less than 50% of the total Al. The amount of Al extracted by CuCl₂ from peat-Al-clay mixtures was the same regardless of organic matter content, but KCl-extractable Al was decreased by the addition of organic matter. Apparently some inorganic Al from clay interlayers was also extracted by CuCl₂. Extraction of two field samples of Maury silt loam with different organic matter content showed that 1N CuCl₂ could be used to estimate the amount of Al held by organic matter.
