Physico-morphic characters of okra cultivars imparting host resistance to shoot and fruit borer, Earias vittela

Present study was undertaken with six cultivars of okra viz. JK-635, JK-045, IPSA-Dheros, BARI-Dheros-1, Parboni Kranti and Arka Anamika to find out the relationship of the morphological characters of plants with shoot and fruit borer infestation. Morphological characters of leaves, shoot and fruits, and data of the insect infestation on the cultivars were recorded. The lowest shoot infestation was found in JK-045 (7.79%) followed by JK-635 (7.96%), and the fruits harvested from those two cultivars also showed the lowest percentage of fruit infestation (JK-045 with 8.34% and JK-635 with 8.73%). Relationship of the pest infestation with the morphological characters was statistically determined through correlation matrices. The degree of shoot and fruit infestation by okra shoot and fruit borer (OSFB) was positively and significantly correlated with the number of leaves per plant. The shoot and fruit infestation was negatively correlated with leaf area and trichome. The morphological characteristics of shoot, such as number of shoots, diameter and length of top internodes positively influenced the degree of shoot infestation by OSFB. Morphological characters of fruits namely length, individual fruit weight and number of fruit per plant negatively influenced the OSFB infestation in okra fruit whereas diameter of fruit showed positive influence.
