The effects of selection upon protein quality in the corn kernel

1. The amount of non-zein protein appears to be a better criterion in the selection for increased tryptophan content in the corn kernel than does the amount of total protein. 2. The mean tryptophan percentage of the population of intercrosses among selected parents was 12.7% higher than that of the original F2 population. All of the selected advantage of tryptophan content in the parents was maintained in the intercross population. 3. No improvement was made in the zein-protein ratio in one cycle of selection. The difficulty in obtaining parent inbreds with low zein-protein ratios is pointed out. 4. It is suggested that corn grain with a moderate protein content having larger tryptophan-protein ratio is to be desired rather than merely high protein corn.
