Changes resulting from a reassessment of basic principles and nutritional recommendations for treatment of diabetes mellitus are reported. The cornerstone of therapy is reduction of overweight for adult onset diabetes. It is now possible to make the diet for diabetics less forbidding and to use it as a potential weapon against the often fatal atherosclerotic manifestations of the disease. As much as 60 percent of the calories can be derived from carbohydrates instead of fats.
