Soil and leaf samples and the growth of 5 to 10-year-old ash and sycamore stands (artificial and natural regeneration) were analysed at different forest sites in Bavaria. The various nutritional conditions and the growth efficiency of young ashes and sycamores serve to describe the critical values for the nutritional ranges with greater precision. This was possible by evaluating the nutrient supply of the sites, the nutritional status of the leaves with and without deficiency symptoms, and by characterising the growth and the vitality of the trees. Both tree species have a high demand for Ca, Mg and P. The nutrient supply clearly depends on the nutrient content of the soil with respect to exchangeable base cations, and for the ash to citric-acid-soluble P. The height growth was mainly determined by the N status of the leaves, which is superior where the biologically active top soils are rich in base cations. The ash and sycamore stands exhibited visible symptoms of N, P, K and Mg deficiency at the respective sites. Visible symptoms of Ca deficiency were not observed. However, ash and sycamore probably experienced latent Ca deficiency in very acid soils poor in base cations.
