Biotypes of the pea aphid, acyrthosiphon pisum, in relation to host plants and chemically defined diets

The performance of virginoparae of green pea aphid clones collected from four regions of North America, and of green and pink forms from France, were determined on two host plants (broad bean and pea) and on chemically defined diets in plant growth chambers. Different rates of feeding, growth, reproduction and mortality suggest the presence of at least four different biotypes. The high mortality observed in three of the clones during the first 4 days following their transfer from broad bean to the diet was apparently due to failure to adapt to these new feeding conditions through a Parafilm membrane, and this was correlated with a lower rate of diet uptake during the first 24 h. These results demonstrate that the biological diversity reported frequently between populations of the complex A. pisum concerning their performance on various legume plants can be encountered on chemically defined diets under controlled laboratory conditions. These findings may have implications on programs making use of resistant varieties of crop plants as part of planned integrated control of aphids, and on research on the behaviour and nutrition of these insects on synthetic diets.
