Assessment of Growth and Metabolic Effects of Chemical Pesticide (Quinalphos) in Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) Plants

The present work has been carried out to assess and examine the change in nutritional status of certain commonly used vegetables due to indiscriminate and improper use/overuse of pesticides and its possible impacts on human health. The effects were specifically monitored on the morphology and metabolism of some commonly used vegetable plants viz. tomato (Lycopersicon esculantum L.) Quinalphos was taken as chemical pesticide which is an organophosphate insecticide, when applied is reported to inhibit the activity of certain enzymes. Suppression of growth due to action of chemical pesticide might have resulted from the toxic effects of this organophosphate insecticide on certain enzymes and growth hormones in plants subjected to different doses of this pesticide. After pesticide application as per standards i.e. optimum concentration, probably the chemical dynamics and metabolic stability remained in equilibrium, which might had supported the plant growth and increased chlorophyll, sugar and protein concentration The adverse effect of chemical pesticide on these parameters was observed to maximum when quinalphos was applied at higher concentration than optimum concentration which might be due to the phytotoxic action of this pesticide on precursors of chlorophyll.
