Pesticides and food: Public worry no. 1

A nationwide consumer telephone survey by the Food Marketing Institute documented that there is a persistant public concern over chemical residues in foods, but there has been no general decline in overall "confidence" in the food supply. Of those surveyed, 77% said that pesticides and herbicides are a serious hazzard, and 18% described them as something of a hazzard. The second highest level of concern was over cholesterol which 45% cited as a serious hazzard and 48% as something of a hazzard. Salt, additives, preservatives, sugar and artificial coloring in food were considered to be a serious hazzard by more than 25% of the interviewees. Of the nutrition concerns identified by the survey sugar ranked the highest, along with chemical additives, vitamin/mineral content, and food/nutritional values. Reliance an consumer groups was claimed by 19% of those surveyed 5 years ago. In 1983 the number declined to 6%. In 1984 it was 9%. (ecm)
