Antonieta Jerardino has raised a number of objections to our suggestion that very large shell middens along the Cape west coast are essentially processing debris. We recast the debate by using the difference between processing and domestic debris in these sites and argue that the logistical use of precise locations supports an interpretation of massive processing activities rather than massive population growth.
