Effect of larval grazing by Lycoriella mali (Diptera: Sciaridae) on species abundance of coprophilous fungi

Evidence is presented that grazing larvae of a sciarid fly, L. mali, substantially decreases the number of coexisting coprophilous fungal species in rabbit dung. There was a significant linear relationship between number of eggs placed on fecal samples and number of fungal species that produced sporocarps. The potential importance of arthropods in structuring fungal communities is discussed. [The fungal communities consisted of Ascobolus spp., Lasiobolus intermedius, Saccobolus spp., Chaetomium bostrychodes, Podospora spp., Sordaria spp., Preussia fleischakii, Sporormiella spp. and Coprinus spp.].
