The development of adipose tissue in infancy

The number and size of fat cells was measured in 13 therapeutically aborted fetuses of 11-16 weeks' gestation, 2 preterm infants of 28 weeks' gestation who died soon after birth, and 30 healthy infants, 1-28 months who were undergoing minor abdominal surgery. The cells in the subcutaneous tissue of the fetus and neonate were of two types: a small cell, not seeming to contain fat, and a larger cell which will contain fat as it matures. Almost 25% of the latter cells measured less than 25 microns in diameter, which has been recognized as the lower limit for adipocyte cells in normal infants and adults. The best comparisons for clinical prediction of fat accumulation seemed to be modal cell size of osmium-fixed cells from the second peak of distribution curves in infants over two months old. Modal cell size was correlated with body mass index of fatness; degree of fatness was reflected in changing cell size throughout infancy.
