Thyroid hormones in human milk
1979
Samples of breast milk from 5 volunteers were analyzed ante- and postpartum for content of thyroxine, triiodothyronine (T3) and reverse T3. The mean T4 content decreased by half within 48 hours of delivery, while the T3 content doubled. It is speculated that the thyroid hormone in breast milk may prevent serious consequences of congenital hypothyroidism in breast fed infants, though normal growth may not be supported. This phenomenon was observed in an infant whose weight followed the 97th percentile for 10 months during breast feeding; as weaning began, he showed signs of hypothyroidism which was treated with levothyroxine.
