Diagnosis and management of diverse ocular conditions in cattle

The present clinical study on diagnosis and management of diverse ophthalmic conditions was carried out on 72 cattle at a cow shelter (Gaushala) at Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The aim of the study was to determine different affections of the eyeball and its adnexal structures in cattle. The incidence, case history, age, sex, breed, general health condition and clinical observations of various ocular affections were recorded in cattle along with their management during the period from Sept. 2018 to Sept. 2019. More than 400 cattle were screened for various ophthalmological disorders by a thorough clinical and ophthalmological examination viz. menace reflex test, corneal reflex test, pupillary light reflexes test, Schirmer's tear test, fluorescein dye test, obstacle course test, dazzle or photic blink reflex test, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy and non-contact tonometry. Diverse ophthalmological disorders like lacerations of the eyelids, chronic conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, corneal lacerations, infectious bovine keratoconjuctivitis, iris staphyloma, ocular proptosis, dermoids, glaucoma, cataract, retinal degeneration etc. were diagnosed and the relevant surgico-therapeutic treatment was done.
