A literature review provided the basis for recommending potassium requirements for Australians. The review considered: functions; total body content; absorption, distribution and output; metabolism factors; experimental deficiencies in animals and man; human deficiency; secondary depletion; features of deficiency; interaction with other nutrients and drugs; food sources, and intake level. Recommendations from other reports were analyzed along with toxicity to establish intake recommendations. It was suggested that people should consume more potassium than the minimum requirement to help balance the excess sodium of many diets. (kbc)
