Weight gain of rats fed medium-chain triglycerides is less than rats fed long-chain triglycerides

Nutritional factors in the development of obesity were investigated with the use of 2 types of experimental diets on rats: one containing corn oil and one containing medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), chosen because of the differences in the routes by which the fatty acids are absorbed. Rats on the MCT diet had normal weight gain; those on corn oil became significantly heavier. The implication is that the liver plays a major monitoring part in caloric intake, since the long-chain triglycerides of the corn oil bypass the liver and enter circulation as chylomicrons from the lacteals.
