Concurrent multiple parasitic infection in four spontaneous cases of free ranging common myna (Acridotheres tristis)

The present study communicates the pathological and parasitological investigation of parasitic proventriculitis and enteritis in four free ranging common mynas (Acridotheres tristis). Common mynas (Acridotheres tristis) are omnivorous that makes them more susceptible for various different parasitic diseases. Due to sharing of common ecological niche with domestic fowls and human beings these birds pose a significant threat of spreading of parasitic infection. Pathological examination is done on four carcasses of common mynas (2 male and 2 female) presented with the history of debilitation and respiratory distress before death. Gross necropsy examination of the birds revealed the presence of spiral, creamish white coloured roundworms attached to mucosal surface of proventiculus resulting to areas of ulceration at the site of attachment along with diffuse catarrhal exudate accumulation. Parasitological investigation of intestinal round worm was done. These round worms in the proventriculus were identified as Gongylonema ingluvicola and Acuaria spiralis on parasitological investigation. The gross examination of the intestine has also revealed the presence of segmented flat worms, which were later on confirmed as Raillietina cesticillus. Histopathological examination of proventricular tissue stuffed with roundworms exhibited thickening of glandular mucosa along with denuded basement membrane and infiltrates of leucocytes. The histological section of intestine reflected eosinophilic parasitic remnants with heavy infiltration of MNCs especially lymphocytes and degenerated and necrosed cellular debris in the intestinal lumen. As per the best of the knowledge of the authors this study puts into record a concurrent multiple parasitic infection in common myna.
