An "optimist's" pessimistic view of the food situation
1976
Petersen, W.
Extract: During the past decade or two there has been a major breakthrough in the technique of food production, and preliminary laboratory results suggest that we are only at the beginning of the transformation. in terms of agricultural techniques, in terms of agricultural land, the problem has been solved both for the present and for the next two or three decades, assuming that population continues to grow at its present high rate. to focus on these factors, as many who discuss the issue continue to do, means that our attention is diverted from the political, cultural, and social economic components of food shortages, which are by far the more important.
