Haemato-biochemical changes in experimentally induced cadmium chloride toxicity in Wistar rats

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of Cadmium chloride toxicity in Wistar rats. Group I (control) rats were given commercial diet with normal water while group II, III and IV rats were given commercial diet with Cadmium chloride at 200, 400 and 800 ppm in drinking water, respectively for a period of 8 weeks. Mean values of Hb, PCV, TEC, MCV, MCH, MCHC and TLC concentration was found to be significantly (P<0.05) lower in treatment group rats in comparison with control group rats in dose and duration dependent manner. Cadmium exposed rats also showed significant increase in neutrophil counts, whereas, lymphocyte count was decreased significantly as compared with control group rats. However, monocyte, basophil and eosinophil counts did not vary significantly among different groups at all the intervals. The cadmium treated rats showed significant decrease in total serum protein, albumin, globulin concentration and A:G ratio, whereas, AST and ALT activity and serum creatinine concentration was increased significantly as compared to the control group rats.
