Some consequences of the new UK 'Recommended daily amounts of food energy and nutrients' for evaluating food consumption surveys

New standards for evaluating food consumption surveys in the U.K. have evolved as a result of changes in some recommended daily nutrient intakes. The recommended amounts for energy and protein decreased 6%, which makes the same diet seem 6% better. Iron, calcium and the B complex have smaller changes; vitamins A and C are unchanged, but new methods of calculating retinol equivalency to conform to international standards will result in an apparent decline in the average diet of 6%. Vitamin D content will be measured but cannot be compared to the non-dietary recommendations; new standards for folic acid have been set.
