The role of women in meeting food and nutritional needs

An international conference on women's role in meeting the basic food and water needs in developing countries was held in Arizona in 1978, and concluded that major food and nutrition problems in today's world are of particular interest to women, but the problems are not restricted to any one discipline or interest group--everyone must be included in the planning process. If current knowledge on growing, marketing, and distributing food, and home food management were utilized properly, basic nutritional food needs of the world population could be met in the foreseeable future. Malnutrition and hunger are specific to families, individuals, and certain groups in geographically definable areas. Inadequate income for individuals and families is the cause of hunger and malnutrition. Food/nutrition problems world-wide are generally defined in too narrow terms. The national marketing system for food is inadequate when large numbers of people do not receive minimum basic food/nutrition requirements. The historic role of women in food production and marketing systems must be considered by developing countries in order to meet basic food and nutrition needs.
