The Sodium content of convenience and traditionally prepared school meals
1984
Hartley, Elizabeth | Ryley, Janice
A study examined the effect on sodium (Na) intake when replacing the traditional school meal with meals made from convenience foods in 1 of 2 primary schools, while maintaining menu items the same as far as possible. Analysis of meals from both schools indicated that the school children consuming convenience meals received 55% more Na per unit energy intake (590 vs. 380 mg/MJ, respectively). These findings indicated that the Na content of convenience meals appears to be relatively high for a single meal, considering estimated mean daily Na intakes in the United Kingdom. (wz)
