Metabolic fuel and hormone responses to fasting in newborn infants

Neonates frequently manifest hypoglycemia in the bones before the first feeding; to investigate the possible causes for this inability to tolerate fasting, the metabolic fuel and hormone responses were analyzed in 44 healthy infants, 9 of whom were preterm-appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA), and 6 were term-small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and 5 were preterm-SGA. Patterns for all neonates were remarkably similar, though different from other age groups in 2 areas--hepatic ketone synthesis seems to be restricted after delivery and heapatic glucose synthesis from lactate and alanine precursors seems limited.
