With nearly half of all elementary and secondary school students receiving lunch through the National School Lunch Program, and with these lunches totalling 4.2 billion per year, a new trend in secondary schools is toward alternatives within the Type A meal pattern. The goals are to increase student acceptance, reduce waste and still provide foods from the basic four food groups under Type A meals. Alternative meal preparation systems include onsite, hot bulk delivered, chilled preportioned delivered, and frozen preportioned delivered; students prefer onsite preparation. A 1977-78 high school survey showed that students prefer choice menu items, with a Type A served lunch being least preferred. New school lunch alternatives include sandwich or "combo" meals, salad bars and bag lunches, but students still feel that school lunches offer superior value for their lunch dollar compared to any outside alternative.
