Metabolic bone disease as a result of lactase deficiency
1979
A study to redetermine whether prolonged calcium deficiency in the diet can produce osteoporosis is reported. The well-controlled study included 30 women with post-menopausal idiopathic osteoporosis and 31 without. A respiratory hydrogen (H(sub2)) test to diagnose lactase deficiency was used. Lactase deficiency was greater in the women with idiopathic osteoporosis than the control group. The deficiency decreases dietary dairy product intake and with decreased calcium absorption contributes to osteoporosis. Lactase deficiency alone does not cause the disease.
