Dining habits of working women will play key role in the future

Working women accounted for most of the increase in dining out in the last 5 years. The average restaurateur today can expect that somewhat less than half (44%) of the customers will be women. For adult-oriented restaurants the proportion is likely to be somewhat lower (39%). About two-thirds (64%) of these female customers can be expected to be working outside the home. Of all the female patrons, about 7 in 10 (69%) are likely to have either fulltime or parttime jobs. For those interested in attracting a larger share of the working women's market, there are 2 important considerations: working women have special time problems; and women tend to be more interested than men in lighter fare and smaller portions. Tabular data is presented for incidence of eating out by sex, number of females eating out by employment status, proportion of meals eaten out by women, and profile of womens eating out by employment status.
