Smoking and weight in the 1983 Italian National Health Survey
1987
Pagano, R. | Negri, E. | Decarli, A. | Vecchia, C.L.
Data developed in a national health survey of 72284 randomly-selected subjects, conducted in 1983 in Italy, were used to study possible associations between smoking and body weight. While female smokers had a lower prevalence of overweight and obesity, in contrast, male smokers had a lower prevalence of undernutrition. Further, while no linear trend was found between body weight and smoking, heavy smokers often were found to be more overweight than moderate smokers, contrary to popular beliefs. It is concluded that smoking and body weight are probably uncorrelated in Italy.(wz)
