Genetic engineering for pollination control
1995
Williams, M.E.
The exploitation of heterosis (hybrid vigor) through the use of hybrid varieties is one of the major achievements of plant breeding. However, in many crops, an efficient method of producing hybrid seed is not available. To overcome these difficulties, several new genetic-engineering-based methods have been proposed or are being used. Genetic engineering can make a significant contribution to agricultural productivity by providing an economical alternative to the methods that are currently used for producing hybrid seed in some crops, and by extending the use of hybrid varieties to additional crops.
