Histopathological changes in experimentally induced Toxoplasma gondii (RH strain) infection in mice

Present study was conducted to record the histopathological changes due to acute Toxoplasma gondii (RH-strain) infection in mice. Twenty healthy Swiss albino mice were divided into two equal groups. Group one (Gr. I) mice were infected intraperitoneally with T. gondii tachyzoites (1.5x10⁴) in phosphate buffer saline (PBS, PH 7.2) and the other group (Gr. II) received only PBS (pH-7.2) intraperitoneally and maintained as uninfected control. Infected group of mice showed ascites and respiratory distress. Histopathological examination revealed diffuse fatty degeneration of liver parenchyma, atrophy of malpighian tubules and hyaline degeneration of epithelium of kidney tubules. Oedema, emphysema and pneumonia were observed in lung tissue. There was intravascular haemolysis in all the above organs. Isolated patches of nodular lymphofollicular proliferation in the subserosal region of intestine were a remarkable feature. There was diffused proliferation of lymphocytes in white pulp and isolated tachyzoites were also found in the pericapsular region of spleen. The findings of the present study showed that T. gondii affected majority of the visceral organs in mice and thereby producing pathological lesions which might be useful observations for future research on toxoplasmosis in veterinary and medical science.
